What Can and Cannot Be Stored Under the Kitchen Sink

Leaks happen, which is why you need to be really thoughtful about what is stored beneath your kitchen sink. So, what can be safely stored under the sink and what needs to be stored elsewhere in your kitchen? Read on for our guidelines on what is safe (and not so safe) to store under the kitchen sink.

Items to Store Under the Kitchen Sink

  • Kitchen cleaners and chemicals (behind a child-safety lock if you have young children in the house)

  • Dish detergents and soaps

  • Extra sponges and dish gloves

  • Small fire extinguisher

  • Small trash can (as long as you commit to emptying it daily)

  • Recycling bin

  • Trash bags

  • Cleaning cady (filled with your favorite cleaning supplies for on-the-go cleaning)

  • Dust pan and brush

  • Small kitchen stepstool

Keep in mind with any items that are stored under the kitchen sink that there is a possibility that they will get wet. If you keep dishwasher pods under the sink, be sure that they are in a container with a cover to avoid any major messes.

Don’t Store These Items Under the Kitchen Sink

  • Any type of food (for humans or pets)

  • Items that will be damaged if they got wet

  • Small appliances

  • Paper products

  • Paints

  • Insecticides

  • Light bulbs

  • Electronics

  • Flammable items

And don’t forget. Like other organizing projects throughout your home, before you tackle the area under your sink, pull everything out, dispose of what you no longer need, and move items to a better location. Once you’ve finished decluttering, then you can organize the area under your sink so it’s useful and functional for the entire family.
