Items You Can Sell For Cash

Have you ever spent time decluttering an area of your home, only to be left with piles and piles of things you don’t want anymore, but shouldn’t be thrown away? I always encourage my clients to donate as much as possible, as they will feel good and make someone else very happy.

But sometimes, you decide to declutter something that has some real value. If you put items up for sale, give yourself a time frame (7 days, for example). And if the item doesn’t sell within that window, then know you did your best, and donate the item instead.

Now, here’s a gentle reminder that grandma’s china doesn’t have much value (if you like them, I suggest using them as your everyday dishes!). But if you have some of the following items, they might bring in some bonus cash:

Jewelry. Think genuine precious stones, gold or platinum.

Automobiles. Think cars or trucks in good working order.

Books. Not the most recent best-sellers (donate those to your local library), but antique books. And no, having a copy signed by an author doesn’t do much for its value.

Clothing. High-end brand clothing and shoes can be sold on certain websites online.

Electronics. Think smart phones, noise-cancelling headphones, tablets, and smart watches.

Sports equipment. Think skis, snowmobiles, ice hockey equipment, surfboards and golf clubs.

Furniture. Did you recently buy a new piece of furniture, but don’t love it? As long as it’s in new condition, give selling it a try.

Baby items. From clothing to toys, there is a big market for gently used baby items.

Toys. From Legos to Barbies, if you have all the pieces, and the items aren’t broken, popular toys will sell.

DVDs. Either music or movies, try out my favorite app, Decluttr, to sell these items.

Keep in mind, selling items online, whether on a website that focuses on a particular item, or using a general marketplace app, can be very time consuming, especially if you agree to ship items. So if you’re going to go down this road, be aware. In the end, the money you bring in might not be worth the time you spend taking photos, emailing with potential buyers, and shipping the items.

Good luck!
