How to Organize Your Kitchen in 4 Easy Steps

As one of my clients said, if you walk into her kitchen, you can't immediately see the difference that hiring Lauren Saltman, professional organizer and owner of Living. Simplified. made in her kitchen. She never had cluttered countertops from the start. But the cabinets, drawers and walk-in pantry were disorganized and overloaded. Over the course of a few weeks, we decluttered, organized, added in the necessary organizing supplies, and voila, the kitchen has been transformed.

From adding bamboo drawer dividers, to containers to hold dry goods, to bins to help corral the items being stored in the pantry, the transformation has been amazing. The client, Leslie R. from Needham, MA has this to say about her kitchen and pantry:

Lauren has worked miracles in my kitchen and pantry, transforming crowded junk drawers into functional organized spaces where I can now easily find tape measures, pens, paper, whisks and other cooking utensils. She also turned disorganized shelving in my kitchen and pantry into usable space. My flours and sugars in labeled airtight jars in a beautifully organized cabinet are the envy of all my friends. Lauren’s work has been personally transformative. I feel more peaceful working in an orderly space and have learned skills which I will use going forward. Working with Lauren has been the greatest gift I have ever given to myself.

Using drawer dividers helped to organize several junk drawers!

How can you transform your kitchen? Just follow these four steps and your kitchen will be organized in no time.

Categorize your items. Pull out everything! Starting with one category at a time (for example, cooking utensils), pull out all of the items from any drawer, shelf or cabinet in your kitchen or pantry. Gather items into piles of similar items.

Discard. If you have duplicates, items you don't use, or items that are broken, discard them from you kitchen (donating anything that is in good condition).

Replace items in appropriate spaces. Now that you've paired down and categorized, it's time to put items back into the appropriate drawers, shelves or cabinets. This might not be exactly in the same spot as before, so give yourself time to acclimate to the new organization.

Purchase necessary organizers. Once you've decluttered, organized and placed items in their new homes, it's time to decide if you need to purchase any organizers. Always see what you might already have in your home to use. Then check out the Living. Simplified. Blog on our favorite kitchen organizing products to get some inspiration!

With a little hard work (and a professional organizer, if you need one!), you too can have a fully organized and functional kitchen in no time!
