How to Maximize the Storage Space Under Your Bed

Do you find that your home lacks storage space? Then it might be time for you to consider the area under your bed, or the kids’ beds, or even under the guest room bed. This space is especially important if you live in a small home or an apartment. Now that you’ve discovered this space, you might be wondering what is safe to store under your bed and what should be stored elsewhere.

Follow this handy guide, gather your organizing bins, and get started.

What to Store Under the Bed

When storing items under your bed, it’s important to keep in mind the frequency of use. No one wants to be getting down on their hands and knees on a daily or weekly basis. This area is perfect for seasonal items and infrequently used items.

  • Infrequently used items such as seasonal bedding and clothing

  • Out-of-season shoes

  • Out-of-season bedding (for those that live in a climate with four seasons)

  • Holiday and seasonal décor

  • Extra bedlinens and towels

  • Luggage (but only if you are an infrequent traveler)

  • Toys and clothes being saved for your next child that your current family has outgrown

  • Gifts you haven’t yet given away (but keep an inventory on your phone so you don’t forget what you have)

  • Important documents that need to be saved but that you don’t need to access regularly

  • Breakable items, like grandma’s China, that you only use once a year

What NOT to Store Under the Bed.

  • Items that are very heavy

  • Storage boxes without wheels

  • Items that aren’t in sealed containers

  • Bulky items (unless you are using vacuum sealed bags)

  • Items you use frequently

  • Nostalgic items (if you follow Feng Shui teachings, items that carry emotional energy can interfere with your sleep)

  • Anything you are keeping “just in case” because these items should be donated

Important notes on how to store items properly:

  • Be sure to hide the storage bins by using a bed skirt. It’s certainly okay to use this space but if you want to keep your bedroom looking uncluttered, then you’ll want to take the extra step to hide the bins.

  • Be sure to label the sides of the bins so that you know exactly what is under your bed and so you can easily see the label without having to pull everything out.

  • Always measure the available space before buying storage bins.

  • Bins on wheels will slide out easily, especially if you have hardwood floors.

  • Make sure that any bin you use has a top that can be closed tightly to keep dust off of your items.
