Before & After: Basement Transformation

Basement zone #1: camping equipment | photo used with client permission

What do you do with your basement that is so full of stuff that you don’t know where to start? You can always contact Living. Simplified. to schedule a complimentary one-hour consultation. Or you can tackle the project on your own. Start by getting to know what is safe to store in your basement and what should be stored elsewhere in your home.

One client (let’s call her Melissa) had so much stored in her basement that it was impossible to find what she needed. Items were in various bins and boxes, on the floor and on tables, and they weren’t organized in any usable manner.

Here are Melissa’s BEFORE photos:

After working with Living. Simplified., Melissa’s basement is organized into multiples zones, including camping, pets, holiday, sports, Christmas and housewares. For easy access, we chose to keep the housewares out on open shelving. Although this will mean washing the items prior to using them, it was easier and safer to keep heavy and fragile items easily available. These items were grouped by use (baking, parties). The remainder of Melissa’s items were placed in bins clearly labeled with their contents.

Here are Melissa’s AFTER photos:

How did we get from start to finish? Living. Simplified. began by gathering all the items in the basement and grouping them by category. Melissa then when through all the items, setting aside items to keep with the remainder of the items either being donated or thrown away.

Melissa was surprised by how much she was holding onto that she no longer needed or wanted in her home. Once the project was complete, Melissa and her family can now find everything they need for a day out skiing or to gather all the items for a birthday party.
