7 Fun Uses for Tea Towels

Tea towels are a fun way to bring color and pattern into your kitchen. Their uses go far beyond being used to clean up a kitchen spill or to wipe your hands after washing. In my own kitchen, I keep a clean tea towel on the loop of my apron for quick and easy access when I am cooking. But there are so many other uses, both decorative and practical, that you can consider in your own home.

- When chopping on your cutting board, lay a slightly damp tea towel underneath to prevent the cutting board from moving.

- Another use for a slightly damp tea towel is to use it over the bowl where your dough is proofing.

- Frame a favorite tea towel and hang it on your kitchen wall.

- Follow the Japanese concept of furoshiki and wrap your hostess gifts in a new tea towel (see photo above). It's like presenting the host with two gifts in one. You can wrap a bottle of wine, beautiful candles, a lovely book, or other gift that you are presenting. If you choose to buy a set of tea towels, they are a beautiful standalone hostess gift. Or combine them with other kitchen items, such as a lovely set of bamboo utensils, for a unique hostess gift.

- Use a tea towel as a dinner napkin or placemat adding a wonderful pop of color to your dinner table. In a pinch, they can even be used as a bib with a clothespin used behind the neck to keep the tea towel in place.

- An eco-friendly way to wrap your breads or sweets when having a picnic is to wrap them in a tea towel.

- Tea towels can be used as hand towels in your half bathroom for your guests. Switch them out seasonally for a nice pop of color.

Of course, you can use your tea towel to dry your hands, dry any dishes that you've hand washed, or to wipe down your countertop or table at the end of the meal. Be sure to let them air dry and then throw them in the wash at the end of the day.
