9 Easy End of Summer Organizing Tips
/No time like the end of the summer to start thinking ahead and getting ready for back-to-school. I know. I know. Do you really need to think about this in August? Well, in much of the US, our kids are going back to school in August! So yes, now is the time to think about cleaning up the pool toys, storing the beach towels, and getting rid of those stretched out/worn out bathing suits. It’s also a good time to take inventory of your sunscreen and bug spray, flip flops and other summer necessities and take advantage of those end-of-summer sales to stock up on items for next year. [Just keep in mind the “one-in, one-out” rule, so if you buy three new beach towels, be sure to donate three old ones!]
Swimwear and beachwear. From beach towels to inflatable toys, bathing suits to flip flops, gather what you have for each family member, dispose of what is worn out and replace those items now. That way, when summer returns you’ll be all set to go the beach! For any items you are keeping, make sure they are thoroughly cleaned and stored until next season.
Swap out your summer clothes. Has your child had a growth spurt this summer? Pack up the clothes they have outgrown and donate them or pass them along to a friend with a younger child. Want to keep them until your younger child is ready to wear everything? Wash and fold everything and put them in a bin with a lid (and be sure to add a label on the outside so you know what’s on the inside!). Take this opportunity to pull out your fall and winter wardrobe, and edit out anything you didn’t wear this summer. Be sure to get rid of any clothing items that are worn out or you no longer enjoy wearing.
Clean the grill. If you’re like me, your grill gets a lot of use all summer long. Be sure to clean off the outside, scrub the grill grates, replace your propane or charcoal and get new grill tools if needed.
Remove and store outdoor lighting. Replace any lightbulbs that are no longer working and confirm that the wiring is in good condition.
Summer dishware. Gather those reusable cups, plates and outdoor flatware, wash them and store them until next year. If something is damaged, be sure to recycle it and replace it now.
Deep clean outdoor furniture. From the cushions to the umbrellas, the table to the lounge chairs, give everything a thorough cleaning and take the extra step to remove any mildew buildup.
Garden tools. Chances are you’ll be keeping your gardens going until the first major frost of the season. Even so, take an inventory of your tools and dispose of anything that has rusted. Replace anything that you will need next year. Be sure to clean off the garden tools and sharpen anything with a blade so you’ll be ready for spring.
Hot tub and pool maintenance. If you’re lucky enough to have an outdoor hot tub or pool, make sure that you prepare it for the cold season. Whether you hire a company or prepare the hot tub and pool yourself pool for the upcoming cold yourself, be sure to review the to-do list, purchase anything you might need, and schedule a firm “close” date. Be sure to follow all manufacturer instructions.
Get the fire pit ready. If you are lucky enough to live in a climate that has a cool season, be sure to set up your fire pit and stock up on your s’mores fixings.
If you tackle all of these or just a few, know that you’ll be ready for summer next year if you complete these steps now. Enjoy your s’mores! I know we will.
